Find the Perfect Mastiff Puppies for Sale

Mastiff Puppies for SaleThere's no fighting it, you're hooked. You're convinced that the mastiff is the best dog around and perfect for your home.

You're ready to snatch up your own purebred mastiff puppy and love him the rest of your life. The question is, where to start?

Your first instinct, of course, is to search locally. And that's not a bad idea. By all means look around for a mastiff locally. But don't let proximity of breeder be the tipping point in you adopting your new friend. A good dog is definitely worth traveling for.

Before you start scouring the ads of your local newpaper, visit a dog show or two. More than likely you'll find someone who can lead you to a quality breeder if they're not one themselves.

Now, take your time. Dog lovers love to talk about their mastiffs, and they'll happily share their passion with you. They'll also be more than happy to point you in the right direction of a quality breeder.

Why would they be so nice? First, they love dogs - and obviously mastiffs in particular. And they show mastiffs. They wouldn't want any second rate or substandard breeder to be perpetuating inferior dogs.

Therefore, you can count on these folks for good quality information about good and bad breeders in your area.

After a show or two, you should have several business cards from different breeders. Start calling them and get a conversation going. Talking to a breeder doesn't commit you to anything.

What should you be looking for during this conversation? Get a feel for the breeder's "ethics" and determine whether or not he or she is truly committed to the mastiff as a breed. You don't even have to be sure that you know what answers you want, or of the questions you're going to want to ask. Trust your intuition to tell you what's right.

If a breeder is too worried about the proper monetary value of a dog, perhaps his focus isn't quite right.
But if you can't stop the breeder from bragging about the bloodline, or how "adorable" or smart or "picture perfect" his pups are . . . well, you might have hit upon a high-quality breeder.

You'll also have a sense of his reputation, by the way he allays your fears or doubts about your new venture.
Feel free to call as many breeders as it takes. You don't want to make this decision lightly. Once you've found someone you feel comfortable working with, go ahead and set the appointment to view his litter.

Now it's time for the breeder to begin asking you questions, so be prepared. They are only looking out for their pups. Don't be put off by this. A good breeder wants his puppies to go to a good home and that's what you're looking to provide. It's a win-win for both of you.

So here are some tips on how how you want to steer the conversation.

Of course you'll want to ask how long he's been a breeder. Ask why he owns them. Are his mastiffs show dogs or house pets? Don't be afraid to ask about the health issues associated with the breed. Every breed has some distinguishing health concerns. It's always best to know what the issues are before adopting.

Find out what the breeder thinks is the mastiff's most important characteristic. This will give you great insight into how the breeder thinks.

Don't be offended by the number of questions the breeder asks you - or even by the nature of some them. He's asking because he just cares that much for his mastiffs - and that's always a good sign.

As you begin to narrow your choices down, don't choose just one. Make a small list of several breeders you liked and prioritize that list by preferences. You may even want to wait until other potential owners have made their adoption selections.

Remember that with this type of puppy choosing, it's "first come, first serve." Once you find the breeder and mother dog you want, you will probably be put on a waiting list until the puppies come.
This can be very irritating when you want your puppy now. This is just another sign of a quality breeder. If it does get to the point where you feel the wait has been too long, you can always move on the next breeder on your list.

It's finally here, the call you've been waiting for. Your new baby is ready for viewing. By this time, your puppy will propably be eight to ten week old. At this age, you'll definitely get to see the personality of your new pup. You'll also get to see how your puppy interacts with you and your family.

Oh, yes, by all means take the entire family to this viewing session. It's absolutely essential right from the start that each member of your family has a chance to participate in this decision.

The puppy you ultimately choose reflects, by the way, why exactly you want a mastiff to begin with. If you have plans on showing him at dog shows or you plan on breeding yourself, then you definitely want a dog who physically meets all the requirements of the breed.

On the other hand, if a dog is simply going to be a loved family pet, physical criteria become less important. At that point, you simply want to choose the most lovable puppy, probably.

Once your decision is made, the price is also arranged and you are simply left to take your puppy home with you. Depending on how old your puppy is, he or she may not be ready to go home with you just yet. However, if the puppy's not quite old enough to go home with you, that will simply give you some time to prepare for his or her arrival.

Congrats on your family member - enjoy!
